Revenge of "Big Leg"

This week was pretty decent, it is the second to last one with elder mooneyham for sure, because the training ends and when the training ends, one of us goes. Its usually the trainer who leaves, so its quite possible that next week I will be emailing from a different part of argentina, but we never know.

On wednesday we had exchanges, always fun. I went with elder Seely, I might have written about him before because this is my second exchange with him. I don't remember, but he is from Canada. I have gotten so used to saying "somos de los estados unidos" when people ask, so he had to correct me a few times.  We were out knocking doors for a really long time, not a whole lot of luck. We had a dinner appointment at 8:30, so as we ran out of time, we tried a house and a 20 something kid comes out. I gave him a pamphlet and told him a few things and I asked if we could come back and teach him on some other day, and he said "are you busy right now?" (that never happens), so I said "no" and we went in even though we had dinner in 20 mins. It was a great lesson so I let the other 2 elders go to dinner while we taught him. He had been living in spain for 8 years, sadly he is going back at the end of this month. He seemed really interested, he is going through a lot of hard times right now but he wants to change his life and he says we arrived at just the right time. We are excited for him, his name is Gabriel.

Thursday we had been asked to clean the church in the morning, it took forever. We were just cleaning and one of our old ex investigators randomly walked in asking for 50 pesos to buy food...it was liliana. She helped us clean a ton so my comp gave her the 50. That night we had english class, kenti was supposed to come early for us to teach her but she didn't get there in time, so all we had time to do was teach english to her and a few other youth. We are making it a lot more organized now, its a lot of fun the kids love it.

Friday wasn't too successful in the teaching department, we tried to visit Gabriel and he let us in but then a ton of his friends came in who were from Bolivia to say goodbye to him.  It was a huge distraction so we were unable to teach anything. That night I cut my comps hair, and he had also bought a huge 3 liter tub of ice cream, he ate 90% of it that first day, and got super sick. We don't know if it was from that, or from some chicken we ate but it probably didn't help.

Saturday was the first day of conference, it was probably my favorite day of the week. When we first got there it was raining a bit, and the signal was really weak it wasn't working. But we tried praying and it eventually started to work. But by the end of the first session me and my comp both felt really sick, we think it was food poisoning from some chicken. It was the biggest chicken leg we had ever seen, we called it "big leg" but it got it's revenge on us, we both felt super sick. We cooked some milanesas but we realized we couldn't eat them so we fed them to some dogs on the way to the second session. Near the end of the second session, I got a call from a random number. I didn't want to miss conference to answer it, I didn't know who it was but I remembered a scene from the Tomas S. Monson movie that we had watched that week...In that scene, he is sitting in a meeting and he has a spiritual impression to get up immediately and go to the hospital, but he didn't want to disrupt the stake presidents talk so he waited until it ended to go. But by the time he got to the hospital it was too late, the person he was supposed to bless had died. I knew that I had remembered that scene from the movie for a reason, so I decided to walk out of conference and answer it. It turned out to be Maria, a crippled lady who is a member. She was calling from a friends phone, but she was saying she wanted us to go to her house and teach her 10 year old grand daughter. Of course even though we both were super weak and felt like we were going to throw up from the food poisoning, we went. It was a long walk, but we made it and taught the lesson. I was trying so hard the whole time not to throw up, I just prayed for the lord to strengthen me enough to make it through the lesson, and he did. We had a good lesson and we put a baptismal date for the 16th of this month. I don´t know whether I will still be here or not for that day, but I felt the spirit a lot walking home and was really happy that I had followed the prompting when it would have been easier not to, and easier to not make a huge walk while feeling sick, but we did it and we saw the blessings.

The next day we were resting a bit in the morning to try and recover, it worked. By the afternoon I felt great again, although just the thought of chicken makes me feel super grossed out it might be a while before I can eat it. We enjoyed the last of conference.  It was really good.  It's easy to feel the love of the leaders and to know without a doubt that they are men of God. I feel like anyone can know the church is true just from watching one session of conference and by paying attention to how they feel watching it. I wish we had conference more often!

A scripture that I liked this week was;

2 Nephi 8:3 For the Lord shall comfort Zion, he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

It's a really comforting scripture, because it can be applied directly to us, because "Zion" can be defined as the pure in heart. So anyone who has a pure heart has the promise to always be comforted by the lord. I know that God blesses us when we keep the commandments! That doesn't mean its always easy, but it will always be worth it.

Love you all! Talk to you next week!
